Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church

In 1993 six families joined together to begin working toward having an Orthodox Mission in Columbus. These included Dr. Stephen Muse and family, Dr. Andrew Harakas and family, Mrs. Sophia Kontaxis, Colonel and Mrs. Robert Poydasheff, Mr. Mike Pappafotis and Mr and Mrs. Michael and Arlene Zielaskiewicz. Holy Transfiguration was officially established as an Orthodox Mission Church in Columbus, Georgia under the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in 1995. At that time Father Jon Emmanuelson, from Montgomery, Alabama, began serving the Divine Liturgy every other Saturday in the Chapel at the Saint Thomas Episcopal Church for nine Orthodox families.
